"Prior to this project my exposure to opera was limited. After listening to Verdi's aria, I was incredibly moved. I looked forward to the challenge of transforming Addio del Passato into a dance track. While in the studio I was influenced by the storyline and tried to convey the emotion of the original into my rendition. My hope is that this version will moveothers on the dance floor." - DJ Tracy Young

New Phase:
A DJ specializing in trance, house, and club, New Phase has truly made a name for himself in both the European and American electronica scenes. His remixes often blend a typical house and trance beat while incorporating elements of other electronica styles. New Phase appears on track seven “Symphony #3,” track ten “Organ Prelude in A Minor,” and track eleven “Keyboard Concerti and Fugues.”

"Ever since studying Gustav Mahler's symphonic scores during my school years and eventually remixing the legendary Columbia Records Leonard Bernstein Mahler cycle, it was clear that someday I would dare to interpret some of that incredible music in another way... Mahler's music is full of mysticism and so is the African-Brazilian tradition. When doing the New Phase tracks for Rhythmic Fission I just kept hearing Mahler's 'Oh Mensch' (Oh People...) song from his third symphony floating against a massive wall of African-Brazilian sonic energy. I went about to adapt, arrange and play the symphonic parts on keyboards, and to play the electronic and acoustic percussion parts live. Recording the track was a lot of fun especially when I had purposely asked a known Mahler soprano, Sylvia Greenberg, to sing a mezzo soprano part in the 'wrong key!' Sylvia had made big orchestral records in big halls but had never sung in a basement studio cans and click tracks... much less on a Sunday morning! Opera conductor David Aronson provided some additional keyboard work during the slow central Aria... it would be cool to see people starting to dance 'in six' rather than 'in four' in the clubs... here's a chance to try!

"It is hard to find anyone who loves music who isn't in some way connected J.S. Bach. By the time I was a teenager I had already played many of his preludes, fugues, toccatas, etc. on the organ -- all that music having a huge impact on me. The 'Espirito' or 'Total Chill Out' interlude is meant to be something one would hear if he or she could travel to a cosmic sea shore for instance. To be in tune with nature. I basically created an electronic drone also including a real string orchestra, four baroque voices and some very whacked out percussion. Then I played one of Bach's organ preludes on a church organ and mixed a short quote from that piece into the drone. I hope this will make people relax and feel good...

"'Espirito' acts as a prelude to 'The Mermaid' which I composed inspired by Bach's Harpsichord Concertos and that same organ prelude. Once the music was ready, Catherine Friedmann (of Music Divine!) added the lyrics talking about love with an otherworldly touch. When producing the track, I wanted to achieve a sort of "a classic James Bond song in Rio" vibe. Letting the harmonies float about, I played live Bossa Nova groove parts on acoustic and electronic percussion, added some bass lines, some harpsichord 'concertante' parts and finished it of with vocals by European Musicals Star Maya Hakvoort and Catherine's background vocals. - New Phase

Jovino Santos Neto:
The barriers between classical music, jazz, and indigenous Brazilian music have been obscured through the playing of Rio de Janeiro-born and Seattle-based pianist, keyboardist, and flutist Jovino Santos Neto. Jovino remains involved with a diverse range of projects as well. In 2000, he wrote "Os Vagalumes" for the chamber music group Musicians Accord, released albums with vocalist Joyce Yarrow and violinist Richard Boukas, and produced and played keyboards on Jill Russell's album Check the Beans. In addition to conducting the Shorecrest Symphony Orchestra, he has composed MIDI music for numerous multimedia projects.
"Even though I had heard Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring' many times before, there is one particular experience that changed the way I perceived it. Many years ago, while on tour in Europe, I had left the radio on as I fell asleep in my hotel room. At one point, I became aware of this music that was generating the most amazing dream images. It was, of course, 'The Rite.' Listening to it in that half-awake state gave me a deep sense of awe at what an orchestra could do.

"Later, while studying conducting at Cornish College in Seattle, I decided to play the piece, part by part, using samplers and a sequencer. This is the source material that we used to create the track for this compilation, following Miguel Kertsman's call -- I had played him that track some years ago. Starting from my original tracks, I replaced some of the instrument sounds, then added some subtle but essential rhythmic hits.

"However, it was DJ Tamara who took the piece to another level by constructing the groove and using her skills in sound manipulation to shape the track. It was a true collaboration, with the piece growing as it changed hands between the two of us and the executive producer. Further, Miguel did some additional mixing by adding other sections I had played as well as some of Tamara's sonic landscapes which she had sent along. It was a challenge for both of us, and we are pleased with the result."
